We have already read the above lines. So if you are wondering what is that something different, am going to say... you will have your answers by the end of this article
Ok, lets see the definition of communication. The commercial on Ford Focus below gives a very simple definition. Check out!!!
The exchange of ideas between a subject and its object. The subject transmits data and the object interprets the data & process it. Isn't it simple? Then why is it so difficult to communicate, or why do many fail in communicating things. Lets dig into it little bit
I hope you would have heard about the Chinese whisper game. Recently the game was modified into chinese action. Initially I posted a game we had in our office for women's day celebration. I was the one who acted the actions. Its was so entertaining to see how the actions change from person to person and finally if you compare the last action versus what was originally told you would just laugh out louder. But since the video was from Facebook, not all could see it. So took a similar video from the web. See the video, and we will discuss more...
Did you see it? Did you enjoy it? I'm sure you did. Was the action so tough or difficult? Why do you think it got changed from person to person? I would suggest you to give it a thought for few mins before reading further.
Did you? Let me give my point of view. This is a one way communication. The action is performed only by the sender and that receiver is not asked to do it back to make sure whether he understood it right. The rule is made like that just to create some fun. Imagine, if the receiver could do it and confirm with the sender if the action done was right, don't you think we couldn't go wrong. And that's exactly what we need to do when we communicate something to the team or to others. Nothing stops us from confirming what the other party understood.
Now watch this video, another Ad
The video should be self explanatory that you should choose the right communication tool, depending on who is the receiver whether team or customer or management and have to go little detail as well if you know the exact person. While I say this, you should also be aware of others around, especially in corporate world and in a written communication, you might have a lot of people copied in cc. Check out this video which is funny but has a lesson
Got it? Its a lesson for both the sender as well as receiver. For the sender, make sure whom you are communicating to and what are you communicating and who else is around while you are communicating. For the receiver, make sure if you are the intended audience, don't judge too quickly... you can go wrong.
Finally, this video from Gaur Gopal Das is fantastic. Its mainly for the project managers and seniors. Watch it out and we will talk.
Didnt I say, he nailed it? Tappers and Listeners. So in other words senders and receivers.... Its the sender's responsibility to make sure receiver has understood what was sent.
Last but not the least, being in corporate world, I hear this sentence from leads & managers too often that a resource communication is bad. But actually, their language is the problem. They may not be fluent enough in english while speaking or make grammatical mistakes while writing mails. I have seen such resources who have still managed to communicate to business and also understood what the business mails them back. So its the leads or managers who need to correct themselves. If required the team can be put through a english speaking training. Mind it, even people who are fluent enough in english can go wrong communication with business.
Guess, I have touched up different angles of communication. If you like it, leave a comment or else you can still leave a comment :-)
